Part 2:

Dental Hygiene is an area we often neglect. We don’t pay much attention to it, learn more about our teeth until they start to ache, but with most things in life, maintenance is important. I had a chat to Jeanne, she’s a dental hygienist in Swakopmund and we will bring you questions and answers over the next few weeks.

What do I look for in a toothbrush?
I highly recommend an electric toothbrush over a manual one. Choose the right size head for your
mouth. Bigger isn’t always better. I always will recommend a soft tooth brush over a
medium one.

Recommend a good mouth wash for adults and kids
A mouthwash is not advised for kids ages 6 or under.

Why is this the case? Some types of mouthwash, including those made for children, contain fluoride. While fluoride
prevents tooth decay and other problems, it can also create problems in young children, such as fluorosis.
For adults go with the alcohol free type mouthwash.

From what age should I be taking my kids to a oral hygienist and dentist?
We normally say from the age of 2. Just to make them use to the environment
so that they can see it’s not a place where only bad things happen. We will play
with them in the chair, show them how it works and if they allow we will polish the teeth.

Next edition we will answer more questions.

Here’s Jeanne’s contact details for more information or to make an appointment:
